It's an entire skill point (are there 4 total like that?) that can actually be lost over time or at least diminished or eroded away and hence isn't something I have really seen anywhere else. I would advocate for a boost that stays with the captain of maybe +5 to an island exploration skill. I don't like the skills where you get a one time permanent +1 to a certain sailor skill. Eventually at the rate it was going I would be coming out ahead in the crew stakes but it would take some time. By the time I fought ships I had enough skills to minimise losses. I never found islands with the mine to give me sailors last time so ships were my only source of new crew. Maybe whack those two dead centre so everyone can get to them sooner? It is the only source of salt that I found and I was getting a little worried that I could not find any till I saw that. I assume but have not checked that the starting class and it's starting skill indicate where on the skill tree you start out so that might be a moot point. The skill tree does indeed make play better but things such as sailors falling to their death and salt could be a lot sooner.
